Before you embark on your journey

Before you embark on your journey

  • Test all lights: Connect the trailer’s electrical cable to your vehicle and have someone verify that all lights—brake lights, indicators, and running lights—are functioning properly.
  • Check the coupling and safety equipment: Ensure that the coupling is firmly positioned on the tow ball, that the jockey wheel is completely retracted, and that the breakaway cable is securely attached to the eye loop on the vehicle’s tow bar (not over the tow ball).
  • Is the tow ball lubricated and not dry (this does not apply to dry ball hitches on caravans)?
  • Handbrake: Ensure the handbrake is disengaged before departing.
  • Tyre pressures: Verify your tyre pressures, particularly if you have not towed for some time.
  1. Over inflation; Tyres will experience increased wear in the centre of the tread.
  2. Under inflation; Tyres will wear more on both edges.
  • Check your mirrors: Install towing mirrors if necessary to guarantee adequate visibility of the road and the entire length of the trailer. Caravan owners frequently fit extending mirrors, but if you possess a wide horse or box van trailer, it is advisable to do so.
  • Number plate matching the towing vehicle: Maintain Road legality by ensuring your number plate matches your towing vehicle’s registration plate.
  • Secure your load: Whether you are transporting a horse or a tonne of logs, is your load secured?

Safe driving practices:

  • Practice manoeuvres: If you are inexperienced with towing, before driving on busy roads, locate an open area to practice turning, reversing, and braking. Keep in mind that the trailer will cut corners, so take turns widely.
  • Adjust your speed: Drive at a reduced speed, remembering that towing necessitates longer stopping distances and slower acceleration. Adhere to the designated speed limits for towing on dual carriageways and single carriageway roads.
  • Manage instability with composure: If the trailer begins to sway or exhibit a ‘snake’ motion, refrain from abrupt braking. Rather, gradually reduce pressure on the accelerator and permit the vehicle to decelerate naturally.
