The importance of your Certificate of Conformity

In the UK, a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is important for trailers because it proves that the trailer meets the required safety and technical standards for use on public roads. All brand new trailers come with one and all UK manufactured trailers since 2012 confirm to this legal requirement.  Here’s why your certificate needs to be kept safe:

✅ 1. Legal Compliance

  • For trailers, especially new, type-approved trailers, the CoC is evidence that the trailer complies with UK and EU regulations.

  • Since 2012, new trailers sold in the UK must be type-approved before use.

  • The CoC is YOUR proof that the trailer meets those requirements.

✅ 2. Registration (if applicable)

  • Some trailers, particularly those used internationally (e.g., in Europe), must be registered with the DVLA and display a number plate (which is different ot the towing vehicle), this is not so in the UK.

  • You’ll need the CoC to register the trailer under the UK Trailer Registration SchemeThis is an important read if you are looking to travel overseas with your trailer including if you horse event or go on holiday witht he camping trailer.

✅ 3. Selling the Trailer

  • When you sell the trailer, the new owner may need the CoC to prove it is compliant.

  • It adds value and simplifies the sale.

✅ 4. Insurance and Inspections

  • Insurers or authorities may ask for the CoC to verify the trailer’s specifications and compliance.

  • It may be needed during inspections, especially for commercial use or roadside checks.

What is best to do now…

You need to keep the Certificate of Conformity you now have with your trailer, in the UK,  for trailers because it:

  • Proves the trailer meets legal safety standards

  • May be required for registration (for international travel)

  • Is useful for resale and insurance.

  • Helps avoid legal issues or fines.

It’s an important document, simply store it safely, just as you would a logbook or V5C for a car.
